Pulp and Paper

Services Overview

AEC Engineering has been providing Engineering and Mechanical Integrity Services to the Pulp & Paper Industry since 1982, when we were asked to evaluate various 70 year old riveted digesters at three different Pulp Mills that an insurance company had judged unsafe to operate at their rated pressures due to original design errors. By doing a detailed inspection of the Digesters and by using Finite Element Analysis techniques, AEC demonstrated that the Digesters were safe to operate at the required pressure and temperature.

From our beginnings in the Pulp & Paper Industry, AEC has become recognized as a leading engineering firm that can

  • Design and implement multimillion dollar plant modifications
  • Identify non capital intensive energy conservation measures with quick returns on investment
  • Solve difficult equipment rating problems to the satisfaction of the Owner, the Owner’s Insurance Companies and Regulatory Agencies
  • Manage Mechanical Integrity Programs that reduce maintenance costs and minimize unexpected equipment failures. These programs include
    • Establishing a risk based criteria for prioritizing the initial tank and pressure vessel inspection sequence
    • Evaluating the inspection data and recommending repairs or alterations
    • Managing repair contractors during a shut down
    • Managing the Owner’s Tank and Pressure Vessel data base and scheduling future inspections and repairs

AEC Engineering has been providing engineering and mechanical integrity services to current Domtar mills since 1982. A sampling of the services we provide include

  • Designed and acted as the owner’s representative for the replacement of a tile lined HD tower and a riveted accumulator with a duplex stainless units.
  • Manages the storage tank and pressure vessel integrity program for 800+ units through routine inspection, develops repair procedures and manages the repair contractors on a daily basis and during outages.
  • Evaluated riveted digesters designed before the existence of the ASME Pressure Vessel Code that were judged unsafe.
  • Detailed inspection of the digesters utilizing finite element analysis techniques to demonstrate that the digesters were safe to operate at the rated pressure.
